Recreating a Legacy Industrial Component
The customer required a replacement gear housing for an existing industrial machine. Since the original CAD data and engineering drawings were unavailable, manufacturing an accurate replacement component was difficult.
Evolve Technology digitally captured the physical gear housing, processed the scan data and reconstructed its geometry into a fully editable CAD model. The final engineering data was prepared to support further design review, modification and manufacturing.
Challenge & Solution
The Challenge
Several technical limitations had to be addressed before the part could be recreated accurately.
- Original CAD data and drawings were unavailable.
- Some surfaces were affected by wear and long-term usage.
- The component included complex external and internal geometry.
- Accurate feature relationships and dimensions had to be maintained.
- The final model needed to remain editable for future design modifications.
Our Solution
A structured reverse engineering workflow was used to transform the physical component into reliable digital engineering data.
- Captured the complete component geometry using industrial 3D scanning.
- Processed and aligned the scan data to create a clean mesh.
- Examined functional surfaces, holes, mounting positions and feature relationships.
- Reconstructed the component as an editable parametric CAD model.
- Prepared manufacturing-ready digital data for further engineering use.
From Physical Component to CAD Model
The project followed a controlled workflow to preserve dimensional accuracy and reconstruct the original design intent.
Component Assessment
The physical gear housing was inspected to understand its geometry, condition, functional features and scanning requirements.
3D Scanning
The component was scanned from multiple positions to capture its external surfaces, mounting features and complex geometry.
Scan Data Processing
Individual scan captures were aligned, cleaned and converted into a usable polygon mesh for engineering analysis.
CAD Reconstruction
Geometric features were recreated as an editable CAD model while maintaining the component's functional dimensions and original design intent.
Final Engineering Data
The completed model was reviewed and prepared for manufacturing, modification, documentation and future component replacement.
Final Deliverables
- Processed and aligned 3D scan data
- Clean polygon mesh of the physical component
- Fully editable 3D CAD model
- Manufacturing and engineering reference data
- Digital model suitable for future modifications
